Boat Construction Rules:

Boats must be made entirely of cardboard, including decorations, and propelled only by muscle power -canoe paddles, oars or kayak paddles. The propulsion system may be made of materials other than cardboard or, but other materials may not contribute significantly to the boat’s structural rigidity. If fastened to the boat, the propulsion system must be connected using corrugated cardboard.

  1. The entire hull, superstructure and seating of all boats must be made entirely of cardboard.
  2. Only cardboard is allowed. Any thickness is permitted. If it’s not cardboard don’t use it!
  3. The hull may not be wrapped in plastic, duct tape, shrink wrap or anything else. Cardboard may not be treated with any substance such as wax, varnish, paint.  Paint may be used as decoration only, not as waterproofing.
  4. Only seams and joints may be taped, not the whole boat.
  5. Items used as fasteners (staples, glues, tape) as well as propulsion system may be of material other than cardboard.
  6. Your boat must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects or anything else that could be a menace.
  7. The boat’s passenger area must not be permanently enclosed above the occupants’ shoulders. Each person must be visible while the boat is in the water.
  8. No use of the following items: Tar-based substances, two-part varnishes, fiberglass resin, epoxy glue, any other two-part substances, or corrugated cardboard that’s bonded to any material.
  9.  All boats are subject to a technical inspection for compliance with these rules. A boat must pass inspection to be eligible for any award or prize. You will have a chance to fix a violation and be re-inspected.
  10.  Final interpretation of the rules will be made by the judges.


Participant Rules:

  1. The boat captain must register before the regatta.
  2. To qualify as a finisher in any heat, you must be IN your boat, not towing it.
  3. Children under age 8 must have an adult in the boat with them.
  4. All boat occupants must wear a properly fastened personal flotation device (PFD) while in the boat or water.
  5. If you’ve been drinking alcohol (or using other substances that may impair you), you’ll be banned from racing.
  6. All captains are responsible for removing their boat and boat items from the Riverwalk.
  7.  Boat occupants must wear shoes with a substantial sole. No flip flops allowed.
